It was the largest dirigible ever built and it was the pride of Germany. More then 800 feet long with a range of 8000 miles. It could carry 97 passengers in luxury and comfort from Europe to America with ease. It could fly at 85 miles per hour, crossing the Atlantic much faster then the ocean liners which were the only other means of travel across the sea.

: May 6th 1937 - The Hindenburg Explodes

It was filled with over seven million cubic feet of Hydrogen and had a state of the art Mercedes-Benz engine. Helium was known to be safer then Hydrogen, but the latter had greater lifting power. It was to be the Hindenburg’s downfall.

After ten successfull crossings the previous year the Hindenburg was approaching Lakehurst, NJ at 7:20 PM on May 6^th 1937 when disaster struck. A gas leak was suspected as the cause. First the tail caught fire, then seconds later the entire air-ship went up in flames.

Over 1000 spectators watched the disaster as surprisingly only 36 people died. Many passengers leaping to the ground to safety.

Among the spectators that day was Herbert Morrison of WLS radio who gave a gripping and tearful description of the disaster to his listeners.

: The Empire State Building

What is the world’s tallest building? On this day in 1931, then President Herbert Hoover, dedicated the Empire State building by pressing a button turning on it’s lights. The Empire State Building was constructed because of a competition between Chrysler and General Motors to erect the worlds tallest building. Chrysler held the title only briefly with it’s Chrysler Building until the Empire State Building was completed. At 102 stories and standing 1,454 feet tall (at the top of it’s lightning rod), the Empire State Building held the record for over forty years.

The Empire State building was completed in record time (just over a year) at an estimated cost of 40 million dollars. It employed over 3,400 workers daily. It was made even more famous by the film King Kong which opened in 1933.

The building lost it’s title of the tallest building to The World Trade Center in 1972. The Trade Center held the record for only one year as countries around the world erected taller and taller buildings.

: The Burj Khalifa Building

Today the record is held by The Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Standing 2,717 feet tall this beautiful building will hold the record for, well who can say.

National World War II Memorial

More then 16 million American men and women served in the armed forces during World War II. Over 400,000 were killed during that war and at least twice that many returned home severely wounded or crippled. It is a shame that it took until April 29^th, 2004 for this country to erect a memorial to those men and women.

The National World War II Memorial is located in Washington DC on 17^th St. Between Constitution and Independence Avenues if you should care to visit. The monument is dedicated to all the men and women and their spirit, sacrifice and commitment of the American People.

History of Mother's Day Part 2

Mother’s Day is almost upon us. In an earlier posting I talked about some of the ancient history of Mother’s Day. This posting will continue that topic with a little more history.

Christians in England in the 1600's celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. A religious decree later expanded the day to include all mothers and was appropriately named Mothering Sunday.

At that time a special gift, called the Mothering Cake was often presented to celebrate the event.

With the spread of Christianity throughout Europe the event was again changed to honor the Mother Church. Though most people continued to honor mothers as well as the Mother Church.

Later in the United States an activist by the name of Julia Ward Howe, better known for her inspiring words in the Battle Hymn of the Republic began a crusade against war. After the ending of the American Civil War in 1870 Howe made a plea to all womanhood to rise against war. This was generally considered the original Mother’s Day proclamation.

Howe’s efforts continued with many efforts and Mothers across America began to unite with her. Mother’s Day was called several things at the time. Mother’s Peace Day and Mother’s Day for Peace to name a few.

In 1988 a United States Postal stamp was issued to commemorate Julia Ward Howe’s efforts.

Who was William Dawes?

: Boston's Old North Church

Did you know that there was another man who also rode out that day to warn the colonists about an impending British attack. The two men, Paul Revere and another patriot by the name of William Dawes set out on horse back to warn the colonists. They chose separate routes in the event one of them were captured. Both men managed to sneak through British lines to warn and alert the Minutemen. It is funny how history only seems to remember Paul Revere and seems to have forgotten almost entirely William Dawes

Like many Americans I grew up believing that the American Revolution started when the then British colonies in America signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4^th 1776. In legal techno terms I suppose that is correct, but in fact the war had started much earlier. We have all heard of Paul Revere’s famous ride, but did you know that it took place on April 18^th 1775, more then a year before the Declaration was signed.

On this date British troops set out from Boston to capture an American arsenal at nearby Concord and also in an attempt to capture revolutionary leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock in nearby Lexington.

We also know that the famous phrase "One if by land, two if by sea" was coined that day. It had been previously agreed that one lantern would be hung in the steeple of Boston’s Old North Church which was at that time the highest point in the city. One lantern would signal that the British were coming by land across the Boston Neck Peninsula, the route that would be taken by a man named William Dawes. Two lanterns would signal that the British were to be crossing the Charles river into Cambridge, oddly the route taken by Paul Revere.

As we all know, two lanterns were hung in the steeple that day signifying that the British were crossing the Charles river.

But just what is Mothers Day and how did it get started. Compared with history Mothers Day as it is celebrated now is relatively new. At least as how we celebrate it now by giving our cherished mothers gifts and other goodwill sentiments, but it wasn’t always that way. Going back a little in time it was goddesses, mythological female deities and the like that were worshiped and cherished on that day.

In ancient Rome it was known as the festival of Isis which typically lasted for three days. Isis you say! Wasn’t that an Egyptian God? Well yes, but don’tforget about Cleopatra and her influence on Caesar. Strange as it may seem, the Romans also honored another deity, this time a Greek deity known as Cybele or the Great Mother.

Does that mean that Egypt celebrated Mothers day with a festivity honoring a Roman Goddess? Nope not at all. As the Egyptian story goes Isis’s husband Orisis was dismembered into 13 pieces. Isis then reassembled him and impregnated herself. Her son Horus grew up to unify Egypt becoming the first Pharaoh. As a result Isis became known as the Mother of the Pharaoh’s.

The ancient Greeks had another deity they honored. The Greek mother of the gods Rhea was honored and worshiped in a festival. These festivities kind of got out of hand and were eventually discouraged and banned only to be replaced with festivities honoring another mother deity known as Cybele in which flowers and honey cakes where shared and eaten.

: Saturn V

On this day in 1970 Apollo 13 lifted of from Cape Canaveral using America's most powerful rocket the Saturn V. It was supposed to be America’s third lunar landing but instead had almost all Americans and many around the world on the edge of their seats just as Apollo 11 had done almost a year ago. Onboard the space craft were astronauts James Lovell, John Swigert and Fred Haise.

About 200,000 miles from earth and the second day into the mission there was an explosion when the number 2 oxygen tank exploded prompting those now famous words by James Lovell to Houston. "Houston, we’ve got a problem."

As the "Problem" was analyzed by the astronauts and Mission Control it quickly became apparent that the spacecraft was in very serious trouble. It was venting oxygen, the fuel cell were dying crippling power to the command module. Missions Control’s goal of landing the fifth and sixth man on the moon quickly became a desperate rescue mission. The lunar landing now aborted, with dwindling oxygen and power both Mission Control and the astronauts struggled with the question of how to get them back to earth safely.

It was decided for the astronauts to remain in the command module only long enough to fire it’s single main engine one more time sending them on a ‘sling shot’ maneuver around the far side of the moon on a trajectory back to earth. The plan was then to abandon the command module and seek refuge in the lunar lander for the long trip back to earth. The entire world prayed that the main engine would work and had not been damaged by the explosion.

: Apollo 13 Mission Patch

The engine fired and the astronauts struggled and Mission Control struggled over the next few days with the almost impossible task of just keeping the astronauts alive long enough to reach earth. For three days the astronauts huddled in the freezing cramped lunar module.

On April 17^th as they neared earth the astronauts returned to the frozen command module in preparation for reentry into earths atmosphere. There were two main problems yet to be overcome. Would the command module power back up after being frozen and was the heat shield still intact and undamaged. Failure by either one of these would result in the certain death of the astronauts after a heroic struggle to get them home.

The command module as we know did power up and the heat shield held. Apollo 13 splashed down in the Pacific a little after one PM on April 17^th.

Hats off to a tremendous effort by NASA!

Did Robert Perry ever really reach the North Pole? This question was asked for years after he claimed to have reached the pole.

On this day in 1909 American explorer Robert Perry reached a location of 90 degrees north latitude. The North Pole. A long and elusive dream of Perry’s. Accompanying him were his assistant Matthew .Henson and four Eskimos.

Decades after Perry’s death claims were make that Perry had made significant navigational errors based upon calculations from his logs.

Frederick Cook had also claimed to have reached the North Pole a year earlier in 1908 and a major controversy ensued. In 1911 congress officially recognized Perry claim.

It wasn’t until 1952 that U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Fletcher became the first man to walk undisputed on the precise location of the North Pole when he stepped out of a plane and walked on the ice in May of 1952

You think nothing of it now. You hop in the car and take off to work or the store and your mind is eased by the sounds coming in over the cars radio. You may listen to the news, music, sports, financial and any numbers of things today.

: The Golden Age of Radio

We have a whole multitude of technology to entertain us and keep us informed of what is happening in the world today. It wasn’t always so. In the early part of the twentieth century there was no entertainment at home. The only source of world or even local news was the newspaper or the local gossip.

You had to go out to the theater, the opera or the just starting motion picture theaters to be entertained.

That all changed in 1920 with an invention that had taken decades to perfect. What started as a simple spark gap transmitter detected miles away by another spark gap slowly emerged into a form of radio telegraph. Morse code was the first means of wireless transmitting over the air. The 1912 sinking of the Titanic would have been a lot worse if not for the radio telegraph.

With the invention of the vacuum tube, audio signals were mixed with a carrier wave in the 1920's and home entertainment changed forever.

For the next few decades in what became known as the Golden Age of Radio, whole families would sit around in the living room listening to everything from music to theater to comedy, suspense and drama. News from around the world now reached right into our homes. News of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 reached thousands of Americans and the world all at once. The world had suddenly grown smaller with this new device.

Exactly 30 years ago today on April 2^nd 1982 Argentina invaded the British territory known as the Falklands Islands. Most Americans and most worldwide had never even heard of the Falklands. Consisting of several islands the entire population at the time consisted of about 1800 mostly English speaking sheep farmers.

: The Falkland Islands

Located about 300 miles of the tip of Argentina, the Falklands possession of the Falklands had long been a source of controversy between Argentina and England, but England had claimed possession since 1690. Possession of the islands bounce around for awhile, but in 1841 England reclaimed the islands as a territory. This held for many years, but Argentina continued to dispute England’s claim.

On April 2^nd, 1982 Argentine forces over ran the small garrison of English marines on the island and claimed them as their own.

Margaret Thatcher, Britons Prime Minister was so outraged she sent a naval for consisting of 30 ships on an 8000 mile journey to the Falklands with instructions to retake the islands. Because of the distance to took several weeks to reach the islands, but on April 25^th British troops retook South Georgia island in the Falklands. It took several more weeks, but on June 14^th the last of the Argentine forces on the islands surrendered ending the conflict

In all Briton lost 5 ships and 256 lives in the conflict. Argentina lost one cruiser and an estimated 750 lives.

Humiliated at the loss of the Falklands the military government in Argentina was swept from power in 1983 and control restored the a civilian government.

In an earlier post I told you about the ninth Faberge Easter Egg. The Caucasus Egg.

: The Renaissance Egg

The tenth 1894 egg is called the Renaissance Egg. The Renaissance Egg was the last egg presented to Maria by her husband Alexander III. Unfortunately he died before commissioning another. The egg itself is made of milky chalcedony and rests sideways on a gold enamel base. A Renaissance style gold trelliswork covers the egg and is studded with diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Another dated egg, the date 1894 is on top of the egg consisting of rose diamonds. The egg opens with a tiny gold and diamond latch to reveal the now famous surprise inside. Unfortunately the surprise like many of the eggs is lost. There was no documentation as to what the surprise was, but it is rumored to be made of pearls and gold.

: The Caucasus Egg

The ninth 1893 egg is called the Caucasus Egg. The Caucasus Egg is made of gold, silver, ruby enamel, rose cut diamonds, portrait diamonds, platinum, ivory, pearls and rock crystal. The egg represents the hunting lodge in Caucasus where Grand Duke George spent most of his life. The egg opens to reveal four paneled doors with a diamond numeral on each forming the year 1893. This is the first egg to be so dated. The hinged cover at the top opens to reveal a picture of the Grand Duke in uniform. Like so many other of the Faberge eggs, the surprise has been lost. You may visit this egg at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum in Nashville Tennessee.

: Diamond Trellis Egg

The eighth 1892 egg is called the Diamond Trellis Egg. The Diamond Trellis Egg is made of a pale green jade and in encircled with bands of silver, gold and rose cut diamonds. It is a shame that so much is lost in time. The base now lost was said to have three cherubs representing the three sons of Alexander and Maria. The now famous surprises inside the Faberge Eggs is also lost, but it was a beautiful carved elephant made of ivory, gold and brilliant diamonds. It is also have said to bear the Coat of Arms of the Royal Danish family. Maria Feodorovna’s home land.

: Memory of Azov Egg

The seventh 1891 egg is called the Memory of Azov Egg and sometimes referred to as the Azova Egg. Did you ever hear of Heliotrope Jasper? Well it is also known as Bloodstone. The Azova Egg is carved from this Bloodstone and is decorated with a Louis the XV style of gold rococo scrolls that is studded with brilliant diamonds and gold flowers. The clasp is set with two diamonds and a drop ruby. The interior of the egg is lined with green velvet. The egg commemorates a voyage made by Tsarevitch Nicolas to the Far East. Thus the surprise inside the egg. It is a miniature replica of the cruiser Pamiat Azova. Constructed of red and yellow gold the widows on the Azova are small diamonds. The Azova is set on a piece of Aquamarine representing water. Azov is set on the ships stern.

The Most Famous Easter Eggs Part 3

In an earlier post I told you about the third Faberge Easter Egg. The called the Blue Serpent Clock. The forth egg, Cherub with Chariot and the fifth egg, Necessaire have been lost.

: Danish Palaces

The sixth 1890 egg is called Danish Palaces. The egg is made of pink enameled gold and is split into twelve sections. Rows of rose-cut diamonds separate the sections. There is also an emerald at the junction of the lines. The egg is crowned with a cabochon star sapphire.

The surprise in the egg is that the panels open up revealing paintings of ten Danish Palaces. You can see this egg in person by visiting the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville Tennessee.

The Most Famous Easter Eggs Part 2

In an earlier post I told you about the very first Faberge Easter Egg. The Hen Egg that Czar Alexander III gave his wife Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1885. The second egg, known as the Hen with Sapphire pendant is lost with time.

: Blue Serpent Clock

The third egg in 1887 is called the Blue Serpent Clock. This ornate egg sits upon a base of gold with white enamel. A golden serpent set with diamonds coils around the base with its head pointing up to the Roman Numerals around the egg indicating the hour. This band rotates and the egg is a actual working clock. The egg is a translucent blue with ornate golden diamond studded bands and handles. Oddly enough this beautiful egg contains no sapphires. There are also no surprises inside the egg as it is a working clock. The egg has quite a history of owners. One such that of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. Prince Albert II inherited the egg when Rainier died in 2005.

: Foil Easter Eggs

We’ve all seen them. Those little foil wrapped chocolate eggs that pop up everywhere at Easter time.

: The First Hen Egg

While they may be great to snack on they don’t come close to the eggs that Czar Alexander III gave his wife Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1885. The first egg was known as the Hen Egg. Looking very much like an ordinary egg, the white enamel shell opens to reveal a surprise. A golden yoke. This too open to reveal yet another surprise. A multi colored golden hen. The surprises are not yet over. The hen open to reveal a miniature diamond replica of the imperial crown. Dangling from the crown was a small ruby pendant. Over time the crown and pendant have been lost. Now that is what I would call an Easter Gift.

Maria was so impressed by the gift that Alexander commissioned Carl Faberge to make more of the beautiful eggs. In all fifty Faberge Eggs were made by the goldsmith. Forty Two of the eggs have survived.

Bob’s Gift Baskets

In an earlier posting I told you a little about the mystical Leprechaun. In closing I would like to tell you about another Irish legend, the Blarney Stone. The Blarney Stone is not some magical stone to be found like the Leprechaun’s Pot of Gold. In actuality, the stone is one of many used in the construction of the Blarney Castle Tower in the village of Blarney Ireland.

: Blarney Castle

Irish legend has it that kissing the stone will give the kisser the power of persuasive eloquence. In modern terms that might be taken as the gift of gab or blarney.

The castle itself was built in 1446 with 18 foot thick walls and still draws thousands of visitors every year.

Though unclear, legend has it that a king saved an old woman from drowning and to thank him she cast a spell upon the stone. She must have not been all that thankful as she chose a stone that is extremely difficult to reach.

: Kissing the Blarney Stone

The stone itself is located between the parapet and the main castle wall. In order to kiss the stone you have to bend backward and stretch while holding onto iron bars. So if you wish to speak convincingly and strongly, visit Blarney Ireland and kiss the Blarney Stone.

In an earlier posting I told you a little about how the Shamrock plays an important part in the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. In this posting we will continue with a little Irish legend.

: The Leprechaun and his Pot of Gold

Ever wonder what the Leprechaun is? Well for starters he is only about two feet tall. He is an old man often dressed like a shoemaker with a hat and leather apron. He is not alone. There are many Leprechaun’s in Ireland, but they are not very friendly and live alone making shoes. This is how he is often caught by humans seeking his precious pot of gold. By the sound of his hammer. If you can catch him, you can often force him to reveal his pot of gold, but you must keep your eyes on him every second because he is a tricky little imp. Look away for just one second and he will vanish.

There is an old Irish Poem, a Irish Blessing if you will about him.

Near a misty stream in Ireland in the hollow of a tree
Live mystical, magical leprechauns
who are clever as can be
With their pointed ears, and turned up toes and little coats of green
The leprechauns busily make their shoes and try hard not to be seen.
Only those who really believe have seen these little elves
And if we are all believers
We can surely see for ourselves.

1781 - Spanish siege of Pensacola begins. General Bernardo de Galvez of Spain attacks the British occupied city of Pensacola, Florida. 3500 men and 40 ships began a 2 month siege in what became known as the Battle of Pensacola.

: Virginia vs Monitor

1862 - Battle of the Ironclads. The CSS Virginia formally known as the Merrimac engages the USS Monitor in what was the first battle between iron fortified naval vessels. After a four hour naval battle the Virginia withdrew. The battle was declared a draw.

1945 - Firebombing of Tokyo. U.S. warplanes dropped over 2000 tons of incendiary bombs on the Japanese city of Tokyo. In the worst single firestorm in recorded history an estimated 130,000 Japanese civilians lost their lives. This was more then the estimated 100,000 deaths at Hiroshima.

: Barbie

1959 - Barbie makes her debut. The first Barbie doll went on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. The 11 inch tall blond Barbie was the first mass produced doll in the United States with adult features.

History of St. Patrick's Day Part 3

In an earlier posting I told you how St. Patrick used the three leafed Shamrock to explain the Trinity. Now a little more about the Shamrock and other St. Patrick’s day symbols.

In the 17^th Century, the Shamrock was often worn on the lapel in Ireland on Saints Feast Day. Later in th 18^th Century it was also worn by Irish volunteers in Grattan’s Parliament. This act so upset Queen Victoria that she forbade her Irish regiments to display it. Perhaps sparking the beginning of the long battle between the Ireland and England.

: The three leaves of the Shamrock

While even today there is trouble between the two countries the Shamrock lives on. Now on St. Patrick’s day a member of the British royal family presents a Shamrock to the Irish Guards of the British Army.

In Ireland they say that everything good comes in threes as does the three leafed Shamrock. To the Celtic’s, numbers played a very important role and three was the most important number. Three represented many things to the Celtic’s. Things like earth, underworld and sky or past, present and future. Even story telling in Ireland is often based upon a three folded repetition. It is little wonder that the three leafed Shamrock is so popular in Ireland.

History of St. Patrick's Day Part 2

Bob’s Gift Baskets

In an earlier posting I told you a little about the early days of Saint Patrick and will continue now.

As Saint Patrick traveled around Ireland converting the Pagan Gaelic Irish to Christianity he made many enemies of the Celtic Druids and was arrested several times, but Patrick managed to escape each time. During his travels Patrick set up several monasteries throughout Ireland. In the many years Patrick traveled Ireland he became somewhat a legend and that legend continues to grow today.

: The Shamrock

Patrick is also attributed with the Shamrock which, though he used a three leave Shamrock to explain the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Legend also says that he put the Curse of God on all the venomous snakes in Ireland driving them into the sea. Legend yes, but this and other legends of Saint Patrick continue even today.

Saint Patrick traveled Ireland for more then twenty years before his death on March 17^th 461 AD and that day has been knows as St. Patrick’s Day ever since.

Both the Leprechaun, the Blarney Stone, the Pot of Gold and the Shamrock are now entrenched as symbols of this holy day, as has the color green. Perhaps the green because in the spring the land in Ireland again turned green as winter snows melted.

I guess you can’t really begin a history about St. Patrick’s Day unless you look into the man behind the holiday - Saint Patrick himself. Known as the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick himself was not Irish. In fact his real name was believed to be Maewyn Succat. History is unsure of his true birth place or birth date, but it is believed he was born in either Scotland or England in the latter half of the fourth century. Rome occupied a good portion of England at the time and he was called Patricius by the Romans. Better known today as Patrick.

Born of a Roman officer, Patrick was captured as a young lad when he was captured by pirates in Wales and sold into slavery to Ireland. Imprisoned for six years and believing that God was urging him to escape, Patrick finally escaped and traveled to England and then to France where he joined a monastery. There he studied under the bishop of Auxerre for twelve years.

When he finally became a bishop himself he believed that God was calling him again. This time to return to Ireland. This calling by the Irish to return is documented in his autobiography and documented by a letter from Victoricus with the heading "The Voice of the Irish."

In Ireland Patrick converted many of the then Pagan Gaelic Irish to Christianity.

: Salem Witchcraft Trial

1692 - Salem witch hunt begins. In the Massachusetts Bay colony of Salem Village, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne and an Indian slave, Tituba are charged with witchcraft. During the course of the next few months more then 150 people were accused of witchcraft. A total of fourteen women and four men were executed for witchcraft.

1872 - Yellowstone Park established. President Grant signed the bill creating our nations first national park at Yellowstone.

1932 - The Lindbergh baby is kidnaped. In a crime that captured the attention of the nation, the baby of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnaped from the family mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. A German immigrant, Bruno Hauptmann was charged and convicted with the kidnaping and murder of the 20 month old Charles Lindbergh III.

1966 - Soviet probe crashes into Venus. Venera 3 became the first unmanned probe to reach the surface of another planet. The probe failed in its mission to measure the atmosphere of the planet.

Yep, it’s still February. 2012 is a leap year and this year February has 29 days, but why you say, is that and how am I supposed to remember when it is a leap year or not?

To keep it simple, a leap year occurs every four years and to simplify it further the years that it happens are years that are evenly divisible by four. So if you can evenly divide the year by four it is going to be a leap year. That being said the next leap year will be 2016.

The reason we have leap years is to keep our seasons straight. The earth does not as everyone thinks take exactly 365 day to rotate around the sun. In fact it takes 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds to complete one revolution around the sun. Or roughly a 6 hour difference. So every four years we need to add a day 24 hours to keep our seasons straight.

What has it to do with seasons you say? Well to keep it simple if we did not adjust the date accordingly, then our winters and summers would quickly begin to occur out of sync with the date. Imagine it being mid winter in New York city on July 4^th. Or 90 plus degrees on Christmas Day.

Ah, but you say we add 24 hours every four years, yet in fact we should only be adding 23 hours, 17 minutes and 4 seconds. Whew! Hope I got the math right.

This is true and this is where leap years get even more confusing. Every 100 years or so we will drop a leap year. This is done at the turn of the century. Like the year 2000. In 2000 we had a leap year and added that extra day, but in 2100, 2200 and 2300 we will not be adding that extra day. That won’t happen again until 2400.

Still confused? Sorry about that, but it could be worse. You could be what is called a ‘leapling’ or ‘leap-year-baby’ or someone who is born on February 29^th. Now that gets really confusing. When do you celebrate your birthday? Or even worse, when do you legally become of age? The National and International laws on this are really confusing.

: Washington crossing the Deleware

1732 - George Washington is born. Our first President, George Washington was born on this day in Westmoreland County Virginia. Washington’s military record as a lieutenant in the British Army during the French and Indian war served as a base for choosing him as choice for command of the Continental Army in 1776.

1819 - U.S. Acquirers Spanish Florida. Then Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams signed the Florida Purchase Treaty with Spain giving the U.S. the then Spanish Florida peninsula. While there was no cost involved the U.S. assumed some 5 million in claims by U.S. citizens against Spain.

1959 - Lee Petty wins first Daytona 500. In a spectacular photo finish Lee Petty defeated Johnny Beauchamp to win the first Daytona 500 at the newly opened speedway. The race was so close that for three days Beauchamp had been declared the winner until close examination of news photographs revealed Petty to be the winner.

Originally implemented in 1880 by an Act of Congress to honor our nations first president it was originally called Washington’s Birthday.

Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12^th were originally two separate Holidays.

In 1971 the date of this holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Yes congress must have spent a great deal of our tax dollars debating this all important issue.

But guess what? That means the holiday falls anywhere between February 15^th and February 21^st. Did any of our esteemed congressional leaders bother to check their dates. George Washington was born on February 22^nd. Duh and double Duh.

Well someone, Richard Nixon?, must have caught on as Washington’s Birthday was renamed Presidents day. This of course after many years of congressional debates.

I have often wondered if there is an Act of Congress that states what color the bathrooms are?

Today in History, February 15th

On January 25^th, 1898 the USS Maine, sailed into Havana harbor in Cuba to protect American interests in the Cuban revolt against Spain.

: USS Maine

The Maine (ACR-1) was the second of what was termed a Pre-Dreadnaught Battleship and was a marvel of its time. A vast step up over the old Iron Clads of the Civil War. Powered by two coal burning steam engines it had a maximum speed of 16.5 knots. 324 feet in length. Its main armament consisted of four 10 inch Mark II guns that could fire a 520 pound shell a distance of 20,000 yards or about ten nautical miles.

On the evening of February 15^th the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor killing three quarters of her crew.

The cause of the explosion was never clearly explained with multiple speculations as to the cause. One of which was that Spain was responsible and the Maine’s sinking was one of the precipitating events leading to the Spanish-American War.

It’s sinking popularized the phrase "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain"

Did you know that there were three other ships named the Maine?

In 1901 a new US Battleship was launched. BB-10 and was named the Maine.

The construction of a third USS Maine BB-69 was canceled in 1943.

A fourth USS Maine was launched in 1994 the SSBN-741 a ballistic class nuclear submarine is still in service.

While the Romans may have historically started the tradition, credit was probably given because a date was involved. A specific date to give or receive a gift. I am sure that even in the days of the Neanderthal there were gifts given. Perhaps the hind quarter of a recent kill to another tribe or to a tribal leader as a form of respect or perhaps to keep the peace.
